Keep Warm this Winter with these Indoor Hobbies

A senior couple enjoy cooking new dishes as an indoor hobby in their kitchen

It’s lovely to look outside at the falling snow with a cup of hot cocoa in hand, enjoying the scenery of a fresh winter landscape. And while it can be fun to go for a stroll in this winter wonderland, spending hours outdoors just isn’t plausible. When you have hours and hours left in the day, what do you do to fill your time in enjoyable ways? If you want to keep your hands busy and your mind active this winter, there are a multitude of indoor activities for seniors you can enjoy —all of which can be done from the comfort of your own home or the Monroe Village campus.

5 Fun Indoor Hobbies for Seniors

Below are a few of the indoor activities for seniors you can experience this winter.

  • Get Your Heart Pumping with Exercise. Whether on your own or in a class, participating in exercise is an ideal way to find daily motivation when you can’t receive the benefits of being outdoors. Thankfully, advancements in technology give you immediate access to various instructional videos for any kind of exercise you enjoy —all online on platforms like YouTube. Of course, if you prefer to be social when you’re being active, Monroe Village has a range of activities from kickboxing and swimming to ping pong and yoga. You’ll never be bored in our community
  • Create Your Masterpiece. With plenty of time on your hands, why not work on honing your artistic skills? Whether you enjoy sketching, acrylic painting or watercolors, your time indoors is the perfect excuse to work on improving your skills. You can sit in your home and work in quiet solitude or join in a group setting where you can participate in socialization at the same time.
  • Expand Your Mind and Social Circle with a Book Club. Reading is an enjoyable activity at any point during the year, but cold of winter seems to inspire us to relish in the coziness of a blanket, a book and a steaming mug of our favorite beverage. But you don’t have to spend all of your reading time on your own. Take your quiet time with your book and combine it with the socialization of a book club discussion. And thanks to advancements in technology, you can always schedule a virtual call if you can’t meet in person.
  • Improve Your Green Thumb with an Indoor Garden. The frosty weather doesn’t mean you have to stop working your garden. Simply move it inside! Gather seeds, pots, soil and any other supplies you may need from a local nursery or home improvement store. Then enjoy the fruits of your labor by watching the greenery flourish in a world of white.
  • Bask in the Warmth of Your Favorite Beverage with Friends. The winter can be a time where we find ourselves in deep solitude. Heavy snowfall and biting temperatures can make it difficult to travel, and we may find ourselves alone for much of the season. To help fight the isolation, put on a pot of coffee, tea or cocoa and make some time to virtually chat with a friend. If you live in a senior living community, you can also meet your neighbors for a coffee and chat at an on-campus dining area.
