Celebrate National Nutrition Month

In honor of healthy eating and nutrition, March is a month that especially deserves to be celebrated.
March is named National Nutrition Month by The Academy of Nutrition. This celebration allows us to focus on informed food choices and developing sound eating habits. Every year centers around a theme, and the theme for 2020 is “Eat Right, Bite by Bite.”

Throughout the month, each week highlights a different healthy eating tip that places an emphasis on the small changes we can make to our diet that can have a positive cumulative effect over time. Keep reading to learn all four tips we learned during this year’s National Nutrition Month.

Four Simple Nutrition Tips for Healthy Diets

  1. Eat a Variety of Nutritious Foods Every Day: In order to introduce variety into our diet, look no further than the five main food groups. A mix of fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy help to keep your body functioning correctly and prevent chronic diseases.
  2. Plan Your Meals Each Week: Rather than wandering the grocery store and grabbing convenient items or going out to eat every day, make a plan of healthy meals to include in the menu for the week. It’s easier to stick to a nutritious diet when meals and snacks are planned ahead of time.
  3. Learn Skills to Create Tasty Meals: Learning cooking basics allows you to cook a variety of meals in the comfort of your own home. We’re not talking about professional-level skills – but researching skills online or in cookbooks will help you home in on key techniques. By preparing your own meals, you’re giving yourself the power to include healthy ingredients in your food and understand exactly what is going into every dish you make.
  4. Consult a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN): RDNs are healthcare professionals who offer personalized nutrition advice and tips you need to thrive through the power of food. What better way to celebrate National Nutrition Month than making an appointment to speak to an RDN? Talk to your healthcare provider for a referral.
